Apple Snow Leopard 10.6 first reactions

SnowLeopard_photoHere are my first reactions to the 10.6 Snow Leopard upgrade. The installation process was a big improvement over previous 10.x installs. To note the initial install process happens before the reboot. Once all the install config processes are complete the machine will reboot and begin the install. It took me about 30-45 min to complete the whole process.

Pros

  1. Bootup time is faster. 12 Sec from chime to the login screen.
  2. I reclaimed 12GB of disk space.
  3. QuicktimeX appears to be a free Pro version upgrade but does not have all the editing features my full version has (legacy version can be installed as well).
  4. Quick access to expose' from the dock is nice
  5. I was able to remove extra language fonts and language translations during the install process.

Cons

  1. My screen calibrations were reset
  2. MY AppleTalk Printers were removed. I had to reconnect to them all via their IP address.
  3. My desktop pictures were reset (once I opened the control panel they magically were set back)
  4. In Photoshop CS4 brush shapes/sizes disappear and turn into the default pointer when you click.
  5. My Apple Server Admin tools was removed
  6. Some of my wireless locations will not join automatically.
  7. TimeMachine was turned off for some reason.

Impressions of the iPhone 3GS, plus my favorite apps

So I've had my new iPhone for a few weeks now as an upgrade from my first Generation iPhone. I must say this thing is lightning fast compared to my old model. I was afraid I wouldn't really notice any real speed boost between the Edge and 3G network but man I was wrong.

So far my favorite applications are:
Apple provided apps: Calendar, Camera, Maps, Weather, App Store, Mail, Safari, Contacts, & iPod

Downloaded apps I run: TweetDeck, Ping.fm, Facebook, WordPress, AIM, Bible, Craigsphone, eBay, Evernote, Google, Google Earth, FourTrack, iShred, iTick, OmniTuner, Checkers, Cro-Mag, Remote, MouthOff, myLite, Skype, VNC, keynote Remote, AT&T myWireless, WiFi HD lite

Believe it or not ,I do use them all. What's your favorite apps?

Quit whining over the iPhone 3GS early adopters

iPhone3GSWith the announcement of the new Apple iPhone 3G S at the WWDC this past Monday Apple announced that you could get the current 3G model for $99 and the two new models at $199/$299 respectively.

Everyone in the world including myself was amazed at the pricing structure it was almost to good to be true AND IT WAS. At least for those who were still in a 2 year contract for purchasing the 1st Generation model or the current 3G's. These folks have to pay the premium price for a new phone and are being labeled as "upgrades" $399/$499.

DVD,DW,VPN,FTP,Parallels,XP & WWDC

This week has gotten off to a wild ride.

First after coming in with a hangover from rebuilding my laptop I quickly realized that the software I installed over the weekend to finish up a DVD authoring job gone bad on Friday was not the software  I needed to do a web job waiting for me Monday morning. I did have Dreamweaver installed so that was good. The sucky part was this account requires a VPN connection to the host environment, then I can open a FTP session with the hosting server (WHEW) to make matters worse this is all over a NORTEL VPN network which has not updated their Mac client software since the old days of OS 9. (A LONG TIME AGO). So, here I go installing Parallels, and Windows XP which takes FOREVER to install. I do have one good thing that came of all this. Apple's WWDC was happening that gave me the opportunity to watch several twitter accounts rather than stare aimlessly at little blue loading bars.

I think my thoughts on the WWDC require another post.

Rebuilding my laptop

apple-macbook-pro-t7500So I've broken down and started to rebuild my laptop from scratch. I have been meaning to do this for about 3 years now but just have not been able to find the right time to do it. Once my 200GB hard drive and 2 other removable drives were filled (400GB & 150GB) I couldn't think of a more opportune time than NOW.  Lucky for me the process seems to be going pretty smoothly. I ran into a few problems with some of my Apple OS 10.5.x updates (mainly checksum errors with the downloaded disk images). Once I re-downloaded the .dmg files problem was solved.

I've got my Adobe CS4 MS installed, bookmarks, Addresses, & Mail configured and back. I've still got tons of software installs and updates to do. This is a mammoth job to have taken on over the weekend but I'll survive it and get it where it needs to be by Monday morning. (At least I hope so). I really need it running by tomorrow night so I can finish the DVD I'm authoring for Woodbine.
